The U.S. men's four-man bobsled team won a gold medal in the 2010 Winter Olympics last month in Vancouver — driving bobsleds fabricated using Lincoln Electric welders. The team of Steven Holcomb, Justin Olsen, Steve Mesler, and Curt Tomasevicz finished with a time of 3 minutes, 24.46 seconds for four heats. It was the first gold medal for a U.S. team in this Olympic event since 1948.
A U.S. women's bobsled team, with Erin Pac and Elana Meyers, won the bronze medal in the women's two-woman bobsled race in Vancouver.
The teams’ sleds were developed by the Bo-Dyn Bobsled Project Inc., an initiative started by NASCAR driver Geoff Bodine. He recruited NASCAR chassis designers and fabricators at Chassis Dynamics. Their project developed, designed, and built sleds for the U.S. Bobsled and Skeleton Federation team, and with their help the U.S. team has consistently improved its results at the Winter Games and World Championships.
Lincoln Electric has been an active sponsor of the Bo-Dyn Bobsled Project since 2002. It also supports the annual Bodine Bobsled Challenge fund-raiser, and Lincoln Electric’s logos are seen on the teams’ sleds.
"Lincoln Electric is proud to be an active sponsor of Bo-Dyn Bobsled Project Inc. providing equipment and consumables for U.S. bobsleds that raced in the Winter Games," said Mickey Holmes, Lincoln Electric's manager of sports marketing. "Our goal is to serve as a true partner with these teams by offering them excellent products, ongoing support and working with them in a win-win partnership."
