KUKA North America opened a new research center in Sterling Heights, MI, where it specializes in joining technologies, like laser welding. KUKA Development Center (KDC) will focus on adapting KUKA-branded solutions and new technologies for use by the company's North American automotive, energy, aerospace, and logistics markets, as well as new markets. Additional services at the KDC include process development, training, and safety certification.
The center features a full compliment of joining technologies, including the latest in generation of lasers and robotics, and draws on the extensive knowledge and expertise of the work force as KUKA facilities in the area. Much of the work at the KDC will be related to KUKA's core automotive business, and will include dedicated R&D activities and cells operated within each.
The KDC is drawing on KUKA's European experience in laser welding of steel and its own expertise in aluminum welding and joining different types of metal.
