The RHS is specifically designed for metal heat treating and decarburizating processes, providing a steady stream of purified water while maintaining a set dew point. During the treatment process, carbon is removed from the metal. Water combines with the carbon to produce hydrogen and carbon monoxide. Water is used in place of oxygen in this process to prevent oxidation of the metal during carbon removal. In wet hydrogen-containing atmospheres this reaction accounts for most of the decarburization.
“The unique feature of the RHS is the hydrophilic non-porous membrane which allows water vapor to pass into the gas stream, but prevents the gas from entering the water,” said president of RASIRC Jeff Spiegelman. “This allows for a much greater range of flow and pressure conditions. It also provides an additional level of safety when working with flammable or toxics gases such as hydrogen, which is often used as one of the process gases.”
