ABB Automation has developed a commercial robot with cables for welding integrated as through-the-arm components. The new robot is designed primarily for automotive welding applications, and will be available by the end of this year, according to Martina Hess, manager for marketing communications for the German company's robotics business unit.

Hess said the integration of the welding cables will mean that users will not require as many spare parts for the robot, and that the robot will require lower maintenance and downtime. Additionally, she said computer simulations for the robot would be more accurate because the robot will have fewer components that are away from the welding tip.

ABB introduced the robot at the trade show. Additional information is available at www.abb.com
