Optimal arc starting and control for TIG power sources

Miller Electric Manufacturing Co. (www.millerwelds.com), said that its Dynasty 200 AC/DC TIG/stick and Maxstar 200 DC TIG/Stick power sources now feature Blue Lightning technology designed for consistent, reliable high-frequency arc starting from 200-amp to micro-thin, 1-amp applications. The operator enters the chosen tungsten size, from 0.020 in. to 0.125 in., and Blue Lightning sets the optimal starting parameters, eliminating operator guesswork.

In addition, as with the rest of the Dynasty family, the Dynasty 200 features advanced AC waveforms designed to optimize arc characteristics for various applications and operator preferences.

Depending on the waveform selected — advanced squarewave, soft squarewave, sine wave or triangular wave — users can tailor the arc for such characteristics as a hard, driving arc, a smooth, soft arc with good puddle control and wetting action, or a punch of peak amperage with minimized overall heat input to reduce distortion.

“Optimal starting parameters are based on tungsten size, and previously could require some operator experimentation to achieve the best results. Now, with Blue Lightning, the operator sets the tungsten size and the machine sets the optimal parameters to provide consistent and reliable arc starts from 200 amps all the way down to 1 amp. While this benefits all users, those who perform precision, low-amperage applications will benefit the most,” John Luck, product manager for Miller Electric, said.
