Miller Electric Mfg. Co. is introducing an inverter-based power source for welding with the reliability and arc performance of its XMT 350 MPa multiprocess package, but with more amperage, power efficiency, and programs for pulsed MIG welding with up to 0.052- and 1/16-in. wires.

The new XMT® 450 MPa multiprocess welder is rated at 450 amps at 100 percent duty cycle, and according to Miller it will improve welding productivity with increased amperage and duty cycle, so workers can weld or gouge longer, and with larger diameter wires and electrodes.

According to the product developer, the XMT 450 MPa is targeted to fabricators, construction operations, shipbuilding, truck and trailer manufacturing, as well as maintenance and repair operations. It has remote control capabilities with either the new XMT WCC or Wireless Remote Control products from Miller.

The XMT 450 MPa is also compatible with voltage-sensing wire feeders for MIG and Pulsed MIG applications.

Miller detailed that the XMT 450 MPa technology features advanced arc control to improve pulsed MIG welding. The operator has more control over puddle and bead characteristics using Miller’s SharpArc technology. Lower SharpArc settings widen the arc cone, increase puddle fluidity and flatten the weld bead. Increasing the setting creates a narrower bead for getting in to tight joints and fixtures.

Miller’s XMT inverter-based multiprocess power sources are designed with Lift-Art TIG for starting the arc without high frequency; Adaptive Hot Start for higher amperage at the start of the weld, to eliminate electrode sticking; Line Voltage Compensation to keep the welding output consistent, even if input power varies; Fan-on-Demand cooling system that operates only when needed, to reduce noise, energy consumption, and contaminants pulled in to the machine; and Wind Tunnel Technology to protect electrical components and PC boards from contamination.

The new package also features a simplified user interface and controls for easier operation, including a process selector switch and large, dual digital meters. It is capable of synergic pulsed MIG welding when matched with 74-MPa Plus and AlumaFeed feeders and an XR-AlumaPro or XR-Pistol MIG gun. So, as the welder manipulates the wire feed speed on the gun, the system will adjust pulse parameters automatically as the welder works to match that wire feed speed. This allows the welder to weld on thick or thin materials without having to change multiple parameters.
