Lincoln Electric has acquired an exclusive global license for a magnetic robotic technology developed by Helical Robotics LLC, a development that is seen expanding Lincoln’s automation portfolio to include the first trackless automated arc welding and cutting solution.

The terms of the licensing agreement were not disclosed.

Helical Robotics is a designer/ manufacturer of mobile magnetic robotic packages that make factory-floor efficiency on-site for industrial, inspection, monitoring and military equipment directly to a work location. For example, the systems are able to reach remote work spaces for wind turbines, water towers, ship hulls, storage tanks, bridges, and confined spaces.

The technology and platforms Helical Robotics develops allow for integrating industrial equipment into mobile magnetic robotic systems. The company will continue to develop and market its robotic systems in manufacturing, inspection and military, among other markets.

According to senior v.p.-Technology and R&D Tom Matthews, “Lincoln Electric’s arc welding solutions combined with Helical’s magnetic platform technology enables us to develop the world’s first omnidirectional trackless arc welding solution. We expect this solution will greatly expand the types of surfaces that can be considered for automated welding, and will dramatically improve the efficiency of metal fabrication techniques.”

The technology and platforms Helical Robotics develops can be integrated with industrial equipment in mobile magnetic robotic systems.

Helical Robotics will continue to develop and market its robotic systems in manufacturing, inspection and military, among other markets, and it will work with Lincoln Electric to streamline product development and system implementation in welding operations.
