Miller Electric Mfg. Co. reports it “re-engineered” its Bobcat line of engine-driven welder/generators to make the machines operate more quietly, weigh less, and occupy less space, while reducing fuel consumption and simplifying regular maintenance requirements. According to the welding technology developer the new machines are designed with an Electronic Fuel Injection (EFI) option that will reduce fuel use by up to 27 percent over carburated welding machines.

Engine-driven welder/generators are the systems most frequently adopted for use on construction sites, for MRO purposes, and in fabricating process, and are also commonly chosen by farmers and ranchers. Notably, they are often uses as an emergency power source. Strong AC and DC weld outputs allow these machines to work on all types of metals, and a large (12 gallon) fuel tank supports long running times. Smooth, powerful generator outputs allow users to start and operate heavy loads without variable power quality.

The EFI option (available on the Bobcat 250) optimizes the air/fuel ratio so emissions are reduces, and the machine achieves longer runtimes, which is a performance factor not available for carbureted units. It provides more reliable starting performance in cold climates, according to Miller, requires no choke, and is less prone to fuel deterioration due to infrequent use. It said the fuel savings would support payback in “a matter of months.”

Other design improvements contribute to performance advantages, too. By reducing the noise of the machine, Bobcat operators may expect an improvement in jobsite communication and safety. It will also address various sound-ordinance requirements for welders working in public areas, or places where working hours are restricted by noise levels (e.g., hospitals, businesses, residential areas.)

Miller also noted that the engine-driven welder/generators have been optimized for truck integration. The shorter and lighter design allows more room for other equipment, and reduces the strain of a heavier machine on a truck’s chassis. Daily maintenance has been simplified with front panel displays that help users track service intervals. Service points have been placed so that they are more “intuitive,” according to the developer, so that oil and air filter checks are performed from the top by the front panel, and the fuel fill and oil drain/filter are easy to access on the side. Tool-less panels make access fast, too.

The three new models are:
The Bobcat 250 a popular and reliable engine-driven welder/generators that supplies 40 to 250 amps (275 amps with w/EFI option) for DC Stick/TIG and AC TIG/Stick applications; 17 to 28 volts of output power when used with a wire feeder for MIG or flux-cored welding. Rated at 104°F. This unit has a peak-power rating of 11,000 W and a continuous power rating of 9,500 W; or, 12,000 W peak and 10,500 W continuous power with the EFI option.

The Bobcat 225 is rated at 104°F and offers 50 to 225 amps of DC stick/TIG output, 70 to 150 amps of AC TIG/stick output, and 19 to 28 volts of MIG and flux-cored output. Like the Bobcat 250, it offers 11,000 W peak and 9,500 W continuous power.

The Bobcat 3 Phase was designed specifically for farm and ranch owners who need three-phase power to run 480-V three-phase pivot irrigation systems, or to provide backup power. The machine offers 11,000 W peak power and 10,000 W continuous three-phase power, single-phase 120/240 VAC 10,500 W peak power or 9,500 W continuous, 50 to 225 amps of stick/TIG welding output, and 19 to 28 volts for MIG and flux-cored welding. Miller indicated the new version of this machine is up to 25% quieter in operation than the prior design, and is 5 inches shorter and is 45 pounds lighter.

Miller indicated that Bobcat machines are built for durability, with armor plate on all panels, on the welding output studs, and receptacles on the front of the machine. The machines are tested in extreme temperatures and environments to ensure consistent and reliable performance.
