The symbols are intended to be used to facilitate a standard dialogue as it pertains to the areas of joining and examination, particularly among design, fabrication and inspection personnel, and to help to accelerate and ease the production process. In addition, the standard also provides a means for placing welding, brazing, and nondestructive examination information on drawings. The standard includes detailed information and examples for the construction and interpretation of these symbols.

The AWS A2.4:2007, Standard Symbols for Welding, Brazing, and Nondestructive Examination now is in its seventh edition. It is 138 pages, and is priced at $144 for non-members or $108 for AWS members. AWS publications may be purchased in the United States and Canada by calling 888WELDING (888-935-3464); elsewhere, call 305-824-1177, fax to 305-826-6195, or order online at http://www.awspubs.com
